Viral Video: A CCTV clip from a busy railway platform has gone viral on social media, leaving viewers horrified and angry in equal measure. The video shows an old man, old enough to be a grandfather, groping a young woman sitting next to him in a public waiting area, repeatedly, on purpose. The man continues his predatory behaviour, seemingly unperturbed by consequences. The woman, visibly uncomfortable, appears to move away.
The video quickly went viral on social media, with thousands of people sharing their outrage on hashtags calling for justice and accountability.
When those we trust abuse that trust
What is particularly disturbing about this incident is the age of the perpetrator. Older men are linked with safety, wisdom and trustworthiness in society. This assumption gives rise to a dangerous blind spot. Sexual harassment does not discriminate by age bracket — it is a behaviour that stems from entitlement and the deliberate targeting of the vulnerable.
The Problem of the Bystander
One of the most troubling aspects of the viral video is what didn’t happen — no one intervened. Bystander silence is a known social phenomenon. People hesitate to intervene because they feel uncomfortable, are unsure, or fear being wrong. But in such situations, inaction makes every witness an accomplice to the harm.
If you see harassment in a public space, report it to railway security or police right away, speak up if it is safe to do so and take note of the incident as evidence.
CCTV is a tool, not a solution
Viral Video: In the last few years, Indian railway stations have increased their CCTV network manifold. Surveillance can help document crimes and assist in prosecution, but it does not prevent harassment as it is happening. This case is a stark reminder that infrastructure needs to be accompanied by trained personnel, accessible complaint mechanisms and swift legal action.
