Gurugram: A young girl, just 13 years of age, was freed from a harrowing experience as a domestic worker in Gurugram last night. According to the police, she had been subjected to severe mistreatment by the couple she worked for over the past few months. The girl, who hails from Jharkhand, was found with wounds all over her body and has been taken to a hospital for care and treatment.
Medical professionals are also performing a thorough examination to determine if she was sexually abused. Reports indicate that the couple accused the girl of "not working properly" and theft, and then proceeded to inflict pain on her by beating her with hot tongs and sticks, leaving her in a state of physical distress. An initial investigation has revealed these details. An official said, "She was not given food for days. The teen used to eat leftover food from the dustbin."
The police took swift action to rescue the young girl following a complaint lodged by a Gurugram-based NGO. The complaint was made after a tweet thread about her condition, created by activist Deepika Narayan Bhardwaj, went viral on social media. The photographs shared by Bhardwaj showed the girl with bruises and burns on various parts of her face and body, including her forehead, lips, cheeks, and arms.
The couple had hired the girl, who was just 13 years old, through a placement agency to care for their three-month-old daughter. The couple has been arrested and charged under various acts, including the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The widely circulated photographs of the girl on social media have elicited a strong reaction, with sources revealing that the arrested woman has lost her job with the organization she worked for.
