Viral Photo: In Kolkata's Kaikhali, a 65-year-old man has installed a Rs 25 lakh lifelike silicone statue of his late wife. Tapas Sandilya, a retired government employee, lost his wife Indrani during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and installed the replica to honor her wishes. The 30-kilogram statue is seated on a sofa in Indrani's favorite spot at their VIP Road home. It wears the gold jewelry she preferred when she was alive, as well as an Assam silk sari she wore to her son's wedding reception.
Subimal Das, the sculptor of this lifelike statue, took more than six months to complete it, which was inspired by a lifelike statue of Isckon temple's founder, AC Bhaktivedanta Swami, that the couple saw in Mayapur."A decade ago, when we visited the Iskcon temple in Mayapur, we couldn't stop admiring the lifelike statue of the order's founder, AC Bhaktivedanta Swami. It was then that Indrani told me about her desire for a similar statue (of hers) if she died before me "Tapas stated.
Tapas' affection for his late wife draws the attention of curious neighbours and even visitors from outside. Sandilya, on the other hand, dismissed any talk of a "attention-grabbing" exercise, stating that his wife died on May 4, 2021, and he simply wanted to fulfil her wishes. "In a strict sense, I am fulfilling my wife's lifelong wish." A few months after Indrani's death, Tapas began his internet search for someone who could make his dream project a reality, eventually settling on sculptor Subimal Das in early 2022.
Sculptors claim that maintaining a silicone sculpture is much easier than maintaining a wax statue, though the latter can be more realistic. Depending on several factors, a life-like silicone sculpture can cost anywhere between Rs 2.5 lakh and Rs 5 lakh.
Das explained that the colour pigmentation process, hair grafting, and eye placement are all critical factors. Tapas babu also wanted a few grey streaks to make the statue look more lifelike, which took nearly 30 days to complete.
