On June 11, 2025, social media exploded with activity when a video claiming to show an Air India aircraft crash in mid-flight went viral. The video made its way to X (formerly Twitter), WhatsApp, and Instagram before the claims quickly spread. The clip captured images of a horrendous event - a plane spiralling down in flames, crashing to earth. The quality of the clip was so dramatic and realistic that thousands of users believed they were witnessing a serious real-life crash.

The visuals prompted immediate fright and anxiety, especially among individuals with family members traveling that day. As investigations began to unfold, the story behind the visuals turned out to be far less disturbing.
As per the official responses of Air India and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), such an incident did not take place on the day when the video was widely shared. The video, actually, looks like a simulation or a CGI-enhanced video clip – possibly of a computer game – that was mislabelled as an actual Air India crash.
Several fact-checking organizations confirmed that there was no real-life aviation incident associated with the video. The social media sites have since started labelling the clip as misleading, and some are even deleting it in a bid to avoid inciting more panic.
The episode highlights the increasing difficulty of spotting misinformation online, especially at a time when media generated by artificial intelligence and deepfakes are undetectable to the naked eye. In the case of sensitive or emotion-provoking events, experts are urging people to check before sharing.
Air India has assured people that all flights are running safely and smoothly and that passenger safety is their top priority. Although the video turned out to be a hoax, it once again brings forth the need for greater digital literacy, media accountability, and fact-checking awareness among social media users.
