Citing deep anguish over the recent Pahalgam terror attack, Sabir Hussain, a schoolteacher from Baduria in West Bengal, has announced that he is renouncing Islam. In a video widely circulated on social media, Hussain said he now wishes to live free of any religious identity and only be known as a human being.

"I mean no disrespect to any religion—this is a personal choice," Hussain said, as quoted by News18. "I have seen how religion is being repeatedly used as a tool for violence, especially in Kashmir. I can no longer accept this. I simply want to be known as a human being, not by any religious label," he added.
The teacher first shared his decision on Facebook and has now announced plans to formally approach the court to legally relinquish his religious identity. He also clarified that he would not impose his views on his family. "My wife and children are free to choose their own paths. This is my personal journey," he stated.
Hussain voiced his discomfort with the growing dominance of religious identity in society. "Why should anyone be killed because of their religion? Everything seems to revolve around religion these days. That’s not the world I want to live in," he said.
The development comes in the backdrop of the Pahalgam terror attack, where terrorists opened fire on a bus carrying Hindu pilgrims at Baisaran meadow in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam. The attack killed 26 people, including a Nepali national, and left several others injured.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly condemned the attack, vowing to bring every perpetrator to justice. "We will track, identify, and punish every terrorist. We will find them even if it takes searching to the ends of the earth," the Prime Minister said, reaffirming India's zero-tolerance policy on terrorism.
Hussain believes that incidents like Pahalgam may prompt more people to reflect deeply and possibly move away from religious identities. "Many more may leave," he said.
