Meteorological reports indicate that Dubai experienced a staggering amount of rainfall, with the city receiving over 142 millimeters (5.59 inches) of rain by the end of the day – a mind-boggling figure considering the city’s average annual rainfall is just 94.7 millimeters (3.73 inches). This downpour, equivalent to over a year and a half’s worth of rainfall, overwhelmed the city’s infrastructure, leading to chaos and disruption. Many videos capturing the dramatic scenes are going viral on social media, offering a glimpse into the chaos unfolding in the city.
Chaos at Dubai International Airport
One of the most significant impacts of the heavy rain was felt at Dubai International Airport, one of the world’s busiest airports for international travel. The airport was forced to divert numerous incoming flights as the heavy downpour rendered flight operations dangerous. Despite a gradual resumption of departure flights in the evening, the airport witnessed delays and cancellations, leaving travelers stranded.
Rahul Vaidya’s Ordeal Captivates Fans
Among the many who found themselves caught in the floods was singer and Bigg Boss contestant Rahul Vaidya. The Bollywood star took to his Instagram to share a video of himself wading through knee-deep waters, captioning it, “It’s quite bad here… Habibi welcome to Dubai.”
Widespread Flooding and Infrastructure Damage
The heavy rains left a trail of destruction in their wake, with key infrastructure in the city, including flagship shopping centers like Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates, being flooded. Roads collapsed, residential communities were submerged, and reports emerged of leaks from roofs, doors, and windows in various households, highlighting the severity of the situation.
