The harrowing footage shows the under-construction high-rise crumbling to the ground amidst a cloud of dust, while onlookers scream and flee in terror. This incident occurred in Bangkok's Chatuchak district, where the 30-story government office building was reduced to rubble. The collapse resulted in at least two fatalities, with dozens more feared trapped beneath the debris.
The earthquake's epicenter was near Mandalay, Myanmar, striking at approximately 12:50 PM local time. The powerful tremors led to significant damage not only in Myanmar but also in neighboring countries:
Myanmar: The quake caused the collapse of structures such as the air traffic control tower at Nay Pyi Taw airport and the Ava Bridge. The government declared a state of emergency in six regions, including Mandalay and Naypyitaw.
Thailand: In Bangkok, buildings swayed, prompting evacuations. The Stock Exchange of Thailand suspended trading, and metro services were partially halted.
India: Tremors were felt in the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) around 11:50 AM IST, causing people to evacuate buildings. Northeastern states, particularly Meghalaya, experienced noticeable aftershocks with a 4.0-magnitude tremor reported in the East Garo Hills.
Bangladesh: Cities like Dhaka and Chittagong experienced tremors, leading to panic and evacuations.
China: In Yunnan province, bordering Myanmar, houses were damaged, and injuries were reported.
Rescue operations are underway across the affected regions as authorities work to locate survivors and provide aid to those impacted by this tragic event.
