A video that has recently gone viral from Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh, is shaking the nation's conscience. The Fatehpur Viral Video has been extensively shared on social media. It shows a father deteriorating after the tragic death of his newborn at the Fatehpur Civil Hospital due to an apparent lack of medical assistance.
The father in the video can be seen weeping, "Bachche ko hath bhi nahi lagaya..." ("They didn't even touch the baby"). This accusation has led to enormous public outrage. The video showed the father's front row sobbing while holding his dead baby, and it has prompted significant criticism of the Fatehpur Civil Hospital and the state of government healthcare services in Uttar Pradesh.
According to reports published, the man was taking his wife to the Civil Hospital in Fatehpur because she was in labour. When the child was born, there were complications. Rather than offer immediate assistance, the family claims the hospital’s staff ignored the whereabouts of the child, who was in a serious state.
Eyewitnesses alleged that nobody, doctor or nurse, came forward to attend to the child in time. The father was desperate for assistance and was ignored. The baby died due to a lack of assistance.
What is especially haunting about this experience for everyone involved is that he had to endure the loss of a child on video and, consequently, he is not just crying but crying out against a system that failed him in his most painful moment.
In light of the viral video and its fast trajectory and spread through social media such as X (formerly known as Twitter), citizens, journalists, and activists alike have started to ask questions about the accountability of the hospital. Should we have allowed the healthcare system to become so callous that it kills human beings, a newborn baby specifically, due to indifference?
Local authorities have taken notice, and preliminary investigations are being conducted. However, there was no statement from the hospital administration at the time of this blog.
Public hospitals throughout India have not experienced this type of carelessness for the first time. Each instance of carelessness sullies the relationship that a regular citizen has with the public health system, but it builds an additional layer of pain and mistrust.
The video from Fatehpur is more than just a sad video. It is a window into a failed system in desperate need of genuine compassion, resources, and change.
A chance at life is a right that every newborn is entitled to. A voice is a right that every parent is entitled to. We must not let the cries of this grieving father go unheard.
