A disturbing video from Lucknow has gone viral on social media with an ugly piece of violence against women at its center. The video shows a man taking an unmerciful beating to a woman and dragging her across a busy street, with local citizens either standing by and watching, or recording the incident on their cell phones.

The disturbing footage has sparked outrage and urgent demands for police action. The incident, thought to have taken place in the Madiaon area of Lucknow, speaks to the larger issue of public indifference and lack of intervention in instances of domestic or physical abuse. 

The video shows the man hitting the woman multiple times and pulling her by the hair as she tries to resist. As cars pass and few pedestrians stop to look, no one intervenes to stop the man or help the woman. The disturbing footage has left netizens demanding strict punishment from police.

Police Responds Swiftly

Barely a couple of hours after the video started to make the rounds on sites like X (the new Twitter), the Lucknow Police responded in a public fashion. From their verified account, the Lucknow Police acknowledged the incident and published a post stating that action would be taken. 

"In relation to the viral video, the accused has been arrested and legal action is being taken. The local police team is actively investigating this case under supervision of the senior police officers." - Lucknow Police. 

Many users appreciated the speediness of their response, but they also had concerns about how violence took place during the day without any intervention.

Netizens are Angry

Throughout the day, the hashtag #LucknowViralVideo became popular, and many people used it to show shock and anger. Some people were glad that the police responded quickly, while others said that stricter laws and more public education are needed to stop these kinds of things from happening.

Proponents of women's rights have called for stricter enforcement of public safety rules and have criticized the onlookers for not doing anything to help.

This terrible event is a sobering reminder of the violence women still face in public places. The quick action of the police is reassuring, but the fact that people who were there during the attack did nothing or spoke softly shows a bigger problem that needs to be fixed right away.
