Madhavi Latha Viral Video: In a recent instance, BJP candidate K Madhavi Latha caused uproar at a voting place in Hyderabad by asking Muslim women wearing burqas to lift or take off their coverings after she checked their identity cards. The event, which was caught on camera, caused a heated debate and led to the filing of a complaint against her.

Following her vote at Amrita Vidyalaya, Madhavi Latha went to many voting places, including one in Azampur, where she started to verify the identification of the ladies in queue to cast their ballots. Her insistence that voting should not begin until IDs were confirmed caused a stir at the location.

AIIMIM Files Complaint

Under the direction of the current Member of Parliament, Asaduddin Owaisi, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIIMIM) filed a complaint against Madhavi Latha’s activities with the Election Commission of India (ECI). Owaisi, who is running for reelection a sixth time in a row, denounced the event as against electoral behaviour.

Madhavi Latha’s Clarification on Burqa Incident

In defence of her conduct, speaking to ANI, Madhavi Latha said, “I am a candidate. As per law candidate has the right to check the ID cards without the facemasks. I am not a man, I am a woman and with a lot of humbleness, I have only requested them – can I please see and verify with the ID cards? If somebody wants to make a big issue out of it, that means they are scared.”

Official Response

According to the Hyderabad Collector, Madhavi Latha has been the subject of a complaint filed at the Malakpet Police Station under the relevant sections of the Representation of the People Act and the Indian Penal Code.
