Viral News: In a shocking turn of events, the Supreme Court of India ordered the Union Government to bring Sonali Khathun and her son back to India. What seems to be a sure banishment from India now seems a win for humanity over strict policing.

The 9-month pregnant lady and her eight-year-old son will now return to India from Bangladesh on humanitarian grounds. The significant judgment by the highest court of India now makes fresh grounds for debates and counteractions.

Supreme Court Intervenes to Protect Deported Pregnant Woman’s Safety

The central government’s solicitor general, Tushar Mehta, says during the court session that the government will allow Sonali and her son to return to India. Several videos covering the viral news get instantly circulated on X. The bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi decided to deliver a verdict in favour of Khatun on humanitarian grounds.

By noting Sonali’s advanced stage of pregnancy and her son’s welfare, the Supreme Court and the Union Government come to a mutual agreement. The court also ordered that upon return, the lady should receive full medical assistance and a free delivery facility by the West Bengal government.

Humanitarian Grounds Become Key Factor in Court Decision

Sonali Khatun and her son were arrested in Delhi in June 2025 under suspicion of being Bangladeshis. On 27th June, they were sent to Bangladesh, which led to a court appeal from the victim as she claims to be Indian. She also shows that her father’s citizenship status was never disputed.

So, the court now acknowledged her plea, considering that if her father is an Indian citizen, then Sonali and her son can also be considered as Indians. And without conclusive evidence against her, the pregnant woman and her minor child cannot suffer anymore.

Social Media Debates Start on the Judgment of the Supreme Court

The viral news of the Supreme Court’s verdict quickly took over social media, igniting intense debates. While some welcome the decision, others are raising concerns about the fairness of the citizenship laws. One comment questions, “You come to India illegally, get pregnant here, and now the Government will take care of you and your entire family? Is this the compassion we’re showing?”

Others are mocking the perceived contradiction, with remarks like, “India: ‘Borders matter.’ Also India: ‘But okay, bring her back, treat her, support her.’” There’s a growing call for reform, with many stating, “The system clearly needs reform.”

Amidst these heated discussions, one crucial question remains: Will this verdict change the Government’s stance on the detention of illegal immigrants? According to the solicitor general, this is a singular case, and it will not impact the broader citizenship actions against illegal immigrants.
