Amid diplomatic strain, Blinken meets top Chinese diplomats; no significant breakthrough

Blinken meets Chinese diplomats

US-China relations: US Secretary of state Anthony Blinken and China’s foreign minister Qin Gang met in Beijing’s Diaoyutai State Guesthouse on Sunday afternoon in an attempt to improve diplomatic relations between two world powers. Despite the highly anticipated meet, no crucial consensus over issue of Taiwan, bilateral trade, human rights were made. In his meeting with the Chinese foreign minister, Antony Blinken stressed “the need to reduce the risk of misperception and miscalculation.” reported U.S State Department. Some experts report that given the current state of relations between two powers, a meeting is a step-ahead despite little possibility of a major breakthrough.

Possible Xi-Blinken meet

After a no consequential meet on Sunday, Blinken will conclude his visit with meetings scheduled with top Chinese diplomats today. As the highly anticipated visit of a top US official since Biden took office concludes, the prospect of Xi-Blinken meet remains much awaited. There is hardly any international policy that meets the approval of two states and relations have continued to deteriorate. “I don’t think we can go back to the good old days. But, on the other hand, we’ve probably entered into a new normal,” said Wang Huiyao a former adviser to People’s Republic of China (PRC) government. Both US State Department and Chinese officials are yet to confirm meeting between Chinese President but the expectations among experts and observers remain high.

Taiwan issue remains troublesome

There are noticeable concerns around the situation in Taiwan as experts believe that the island might escalate possibility of arms confrontation between US and China. As per Chinese state-run media foreign minister Gang told Blinken that Taiwan issue is the core of China’s core interests, the most important issue in Sino-US relations, and the most prominent risk. China has accused that US long has been abusing One China Policy by increasing assistance to Taiwan in recent years. China maintains that breakaway province will one day rejoin with the mainland as it has always been an unalienable part of PRC. US has strong unofficial links with the island nation as it forms part of First island chain, a group of friendly countries that are significant to Washington’s China policy.
