The interim government of Bangladesh, led by Muhammad Yunus, has once again found itself in controversy. This time, US politician and intelligence chief Tulsi Gabbard has made strong remarks regarding the growing violence against minorities in the country. Her statement, given in an interview with an Indian news channel, has sparked a heated response from the Bangladeshi government. Following this, the US also criticised Muhammad Yunus and his administration, increasing tensions between the two nations. Let’s understand the full situation.

Tulsi Gabbard’s Strong Remarks on Violence in Bangladesh

Tulsi Gabbard, in a recent interview, raised concerns about rising violence against minorities in Bangladesh. She linked this issue to the larger ideology of Islamist terrorism, stating that many extremist groups share the same goal of establishing an Islamist caliphate.

“The threat of Islamist terrorists and their global networks stems from the same ideology. Their objective is to rule and govern under an Islamist caliphate system,” Gabbard said.

She further added that while discussions between US President Donald Trump and Muhammad Yunus' interim government have begun, Islamic terrorism remains a serious threat. Her statement created a stir, drawing sharp reactions from Bangladesh.

Bangladesh Government Reacts to Tulsi Gabbard’s Allegations

The Muhammad Yunus-led administration dismissed Gabbard’s remarks by calling them misleading. The Chief Adviser’s office released an official statement rejecting the claims, saying that they present a false image of Bangladesh.

“This statement unfairly generalises an entire nation. Bangladesh is known for its inclusive and peaceful practice of Islam. We have made significant progress in combating extremism and terrorism,” the statement read.

The Bangladeshi government strongly condemned the portrayal of the country as an Islamist hub and defended its efforts in maintaining peace and security.

US Criticises Muhammad Yunus Government Over Minority Violence

The controversy took another turn when the US government reacted to the situation. US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce addressed the issue, stressing that America closely monitors how minorities are treated in Bangladesh.

“We condemn any form of violence or discrimination against minority communities in any country. We acknowledge Bangladesh’s efforts in ensuring security, but we expect continued action,” Bruce said in a media briefing.
