Tim Scott:Tim Scott, the lone Black Republican Senator, has announced he would contest the 2024 Presidential elections. Scott’s announcement makes news because 92% of Black voters backed Joe Biden in 2020 while 55% of White voters supported Trump. This implies that Scott will have a tough time convincing Black voters to support him.
Trump to run again
The 2024 elections become even more interesting because they will be probably three contestants in the Republican camp. Former President Donald Trump has already declared he will again run for the White House.Florida Governor Ron DeSantis will likely declare his nomination on May 24. Both say the US is declining and must be rescued from the ‘corrupt leftist elite’. For them, the Democrats represent the leftists who are out to damage the United States politically and economically.
An NBC poll suggested that 70% of Republican voters stand behind Trump while 21% of all voters polled by Statista say they favour DeSantis as President. It should be noted that Trump is battling several criminal charges currently.
What is Tim Scott’s strategy?
Unlike DeSantis and Trump who are highlighting the negatives in American politics, Scott says the US isn’t a racist society. He cites his own example of being a self-made man reared by a single mother.
Scott says the United States is a land of promise but disadvantaged communities want support from the government. Many Republican watchers think Scott’s ‘compassionate conservatism’ night see him through the nomination process.
At the time of writing this article, a Reuters report says 2% of all Republicans plan to vote for Tim Scott.
Political experts say there are several things going for Senator Scott. He is very popular in South Carolina, a state crucial for the Republican nomination process. Scott also gets along well with donors. People close to the South Carolina Senator say that Larry Ellison will support the Senator during the nomination process.
