PM Modi: India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the boss, declared Australian PM Anthony Albanese in a glittering ceremony in Sydney on May 23, 2023. Modi is visiting Australia after 9 years.
Albanese and Modi were attending a community event at Qudos Beach. Various estimates put the crowd size – which comprised mainly Indians - at this beach at over 20,000. The Australian PM said he was thrilled at seeing this kind of support for any person on Australian soil. Even Bruce Springsteen didn’t get this kind of reception when he visited Australia.

Look South East
Narendra Modi’s visit to Australia is part of India’s Look South East policy. In recent years, India has developed strong relations with the ASEAN member countries. Before visiting Australia this year, Modi had visited Japan for a G-7 conference, then Papua New Guinea, and later Fiji. The last two countries are tiny islands in the Pacific but hold immense strategic importance.Both Fiji and Australia have a significant Indian community. There are an estimated 600,000 Australians who identify themselves as being Indian in origin. Furthermore, roughly 550,000 people from this number have been born in that country.The Sydney event was conducted by the Indian Australian Diaspora Foundation. Members of the IADF ran special buses from Canberra and Brisbane to Sydney.

To a higher level
Modi thanked the assembled Indians for contributing to Australia’s growth. Until now, the Indian PM said, Australia- India relations rested on 3 Cs- Curry, Commonwealth and Cricket. But now, India wants these ties to go to the next level.
Both nations are part of the Quad, which also comprises Japan and the United States. Through Quad, these countries hope to stabilize the Indo-Pacific region which is seeing aggressive postures of China. Quad also aims to foster close relationships among its member states particularly in defence and technology.
