Turkey chooses nationalism over Change in historic election

Turkey Election 2023: Turkish voters are voting for nationalism and stability in the 2023 Presidential elections and it seems Tayyip Erdogan will become the President yet again. His challenger is Kemal Kilicdaroglu. The final results of these elections will only be known on May 28, Sunday.
These elections are significant because Turkey observers expected a change. The country is facing an economic crisis and is also encircled by countries at war. Ukraine in the north and Syria in the southeast are engulfed in violent conflicts with Russia and the Kurd rebels, respectively. The war in Syria, particularly, has triggered the migration of millions of refugees into Turkey, thereby causing an economic crisis in the country.Erdogan has pledged to send these migrants back to Syria.

What is Turkish nationalism?

According to Wikipedia, Turkish nationalism is the idea that Turkey belongs to its native people. Turkish nationalism discriminates between the Turkish people and people from other ethnicities.
However, some political observers say that Erdogan’s Turkish nationalism also has shades of Islam. Erdogan has allowed women to stay veiled in public places and also supports converting ancient churches into mosques. That said, the current Turkish President is clever not to abandon the secular values of the country.Tayyip Erdogan’s party, AKP, is supported by MHP, an ultra-nationalist party. MHP says anybody not a Muslim is not Turkish at all.

Why is Erdogan winning?

The only plausible reason for Erdogan’s win is that the electorate isn’t convinced how the opposition’s alliance can govern the country. This alliance, called Nation, is made up of six parties, ranging from Nationalists to Social Democrats and Islamic parties. The Turkish electorate is probably confused by this heterogeneity.
On the other hand, Tayyip Erdogan has been ruling the country for 20 years now and the Turkish people know his government very well.
