22 die in Sudan as rivals fight each other

Sudan: At least 22 people have died in an airstrike by the Sudanese Army on Rapid Support Forces, according to Reuters. The news agency was quoting the Sudanese Ministry of Health.

In a separate statement, Rapid Support Forces (RSF) claimed that 31 people have died in the Saturday attack which occurred in Omdurman.

“The Rapid Support Forces condemn the most severe aircraft bombing on Saturday morning, on innocent citizens in a number of residential neighbourhoods,” RSF said in a statement.

It added, “We call on all activists at home and abroad to do their responsibilities to monitor and document the killings committed by the coup d’etatists and the ruling system on a daily basis.”

Fighting going on for months

The two rival groups have been fighting each other since April this year.

A video posted by the health ministry showed several bodies lying on the ground with white sheets covering them. The video also showed people pulling out the wounded from under the rubble.

Last month, an airstrike killed 17 people including 5 children, reports India Today.

There was no comment from the Sudanese Army regarding Saturday’s attack.

Two Sudanese residents in Omdurman said it was difficult to tell which side mounted the Saturday attack. They said lately the Sudanese Army had been targeting RSF’s troops with air attacks. The RSF, on the other hand, was using drones and anti-aircraft guns against the Sudanese Army.

“It is like hell”

One of the residents who declined to give his full name said the Army was targeting houses which it suspected were shielding RSF members.

“The area is like a hell ... fighting around the clock and people are not able to leave,” he said.

The United Nations says more than 2.5 million Sudanese have left the country because of the civil war. Many of these people have entered Egypt, Libya and Congo without passports.
