Los Angeles: All six people aboard a private jet died after it crashed on early Saturday 87 miles south of Los Angeles. The crash site is at French Valley Airport in Riverside County.
Reuters says the plane caught fire after crashing and all the dead were adults.
The aircraft, a Cessna 550 private jet was flying from Las Vegas when the accident happened. It crashed 300 feet from the runway.
Elliott Simpson, an investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board said the small plane crashed after attempting to land at the airport for the second time.
Permission at the last minute
ABC7.com says the 1979 Cessna took off from the Harry Reid International Airport at 3.15 am on Saturday. The plane was not scheduled to fly at the time but got permission at the last minute.
A marine layer enveloped the French Valley Airport before the twin-engine attempted to land at 4.15 am on Saturday.
Marine layers develop when the ocean cools the warm air above. This mass of cool air is trapped under a mass of warmer air. Marine layers develop typically in California and often cause foggy conditions.
Did invisibility cause the crash?
“The pilot reported to air traffic control that he was going to perform a missed approach, which generally happens when the pilot can’t see the runway,” Simpson told a press conference.
Quoting the NTSB, ABC7.com says the Air Traffic Control cleared the pilot for the first landing and then cleared him again after the initial approach failed.
The debris area is 200 feet and barring the tail, every other part of the plane had burned down.
Simpson told the reporters that the FAA would investigate the crash for two days. The preliminary report could come out in 14 days. Normally, the final report takes around 18 months, Simpson said.
