Donald Trump, the president of the US, who proclaimed a 25% tariff on Indian imports, AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi, in a scorching remark, said that this was straight upon the head of India against its sovereignty and monetary authority. These concerns intensified as the Hyderabad MP posed pointed criticisms of the silence accorded to the matter by the Modi government and the atrocious consequences that India is heading towards with its struggling economy, amid the Indo-US trade relationship marred by problems.
Owaisi Condemns Tariff as Economic Bullying
The Asaduddin Owaisi tweet, which was circulated on X (previously Twitter), was critical of the tariff action and reasoning that India deals with Russia in some trade, notably in defence and energy, and that may be the driving force behind the tariff act. In his post, Trump had referenced India using its military equipment to buy more Russian as a reason why the 25% tariff, which will kick in on August 1, had to be imposed. Owaisi retorted, saying that India is an independent, sovereign nation. No dependent kingdom that pays salami at the court of the emperor.” He termed the US action as a hostile and obnoxious act and said that this might have a catastrophic impact on Indian trade.
Impact on Indian Economy: MSMEs and Farmers at Risk
This new tariff will hit the backbone of the Indian economy, i.e., MSMEs, IT service providers, and farmers, said the Hyderabad MP. Owaisi went further to argue that foreign direct investment and the competitiveness of exports would also be put off by this action. He contrasted the 25 percent tariff imposed on India with lower tariffs on other countries such as Japan (15%), Vietnam (20%), and Indonesia (19%), a practice he termed unfair and economically discriminating. As he said, these measures would have ruined the trade edge of India and would have resulted in massive unemployment.
Political Silence and Strategic Weakness?
Owaisi was not very discreet in terming an attack against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He questioned the silence of the PM and made a sarcastic remark about Modi and the 56-inch chest thundering quote, which gets quoted more times than it can be proved wrong, but why does it not thunder when the tariff is 56%? This is a sharp attack, as there is increasing unease about the geopolitical standing of India and its trade strength amidst a fast-altering world order.
