At least 3 dead after storms hit US Midwest and South

Storms have claimed at least 3 lives in US till now.

US storms: Dozens of homes were damaged and at least three people were killed after storms hit the US Midwest and South. National Weather Service said severe storms and multiple tornadoes had hit Indiana and Arkansas.

Images from local media showed several uprooted trees and damaged houses in the affected area. A hailstorm also visited Indiana and the neighbouring states.

There was one confirmed death in Indiana’s Martin County. An emergency official said the deceased person’s partner had been airlifted to a hospital. Both lived in a log cabin which was destroyed in a storm.

Emergency Management Director Cameron Wolf said that much of the damage happened in the countryside. In an interview with PBS, Wolf said that “towns were not hit that hard by the storms.”

A CBS News affiliate said two people died in Arkansas on Sunday when a tree fell on their house due to storms. The affiliate was quoting the Lonoke County Sheriff’s office.

75 houses damaged

Fire services chief Eric Funkhouser has said that about 75 houses in Bargersville suffered moderate to severe damage due to storms. This was reported by an affiliate of NBC News.

Bargersville is south of Indianapolis.

The NBC News affiliate also reported that shelters were being set up in Central Indiana for all those whose homes have been damaged by the storms.

Power outages

A power outage tracking website has reported that half a million consumers faced power outages in the US Midwest and South.

Last week, one person died and several were injured in Mississippi due to severe tornadoes.

Weather officials told media that severe heat waves in Florida and Texas spawned several twisters in these states. Four people died as a result of these weather phenomena.

Flooding also forced 150 people to evacuate their homes in these regions.
