At least 40 migrants found dead in truck in US city: Report

At least 40 people believed to be migrants were found dead in the back of a tractor-trailer in San Antonio on Monday, according to law enforcement officials.

Sixteen others, including four children, were found alive and taken from the vehicle to receive medical treatment, police and medical officials told a news conference.

The truck was found next to railway tracks in a remote area of San Antonio.

Photos posted to Twitter by Texan television broadcaster KSAT show police cars and ambulances surrounding the truck.

It is not clear how the people died but towns across Texas have experienced a heatwave throughout June with temperatures rising above 39 degrees.

The San Antonio Mayor’s office confirmed a press conference will be held in several hours.

The Mexican General Consulate in San Antonio said on Twitter that it would provide aid to any Mexicans involved in the incident if there were any. It also said Consul General Ruben Minutti was on the way to the scene.

Heat poses a serious danger, particularly when temperatures can rise severely inside vehicles. Weather in the San Antonio area was mostly cloudy Monday, but temperatures approached 100 degrees.
