Along with five other security guards, a top Pakistan Army officer named Major Zaid was killed on July 24, 2025, by Baloch insurgents in the dangerous Mastung district of Balochistan. An improvised explosive device (IED) that was set off from a distance is said to have hit the column in the Talkh Kavi area.

It was a strong blast that destroyed the car and killed several people. Witnesses said they heard a loud explosion and then heard a lot of gunshots.

Balochistan no longer under Pakistani control?

Security experts and people who watch the area have warned that Balochistan is becoming less under the control of Islamabad. Over the past month, insurgents have not only increased the number of strikes.

A recent operation called Operation Baam and several successful ambushes in Mastung and nearby districts show that the Pakistani government no longer has much control over large parts of Balochistan.

A second attack happened hours later in the same area

A second attack happened the same day; this time it was aimed at Pakistani security forces in the Ab-e-Gul area of Mastung. A few more people were hurt, but the exact number has not been confirmed. Authorities think the killings were planned, which shows that insurgent groups are getting better at running their operations.

Pressures Rising and Operation Baam

These events happen right after Operation Baam, the BLF's recent attack from July 9–11 that is said to have killed dozens of Pakistani soldiers and messed up army infrastructure. Other news sources said it was a major escalation in the insurgency, even though Pakistan hasn't publicly admitted it.

Support and countermeasures from the military

Since the attacks, the Pakistan Army has sent in more troops and increased air monitoring over Mastung. There are efforts going on to protect routes connected to CPEC and find and destroy places where militants hide in the area.

A volatile area on the edge

Separatists and government troops are still fighting in Balochistan, making it one of the most unstable places in Pakistan. As insurgent groups use more coordinated and powerful tactics, the dangers for both soldiers and citizens keep going up.

The provincial government has promised justice, but political problems need to be fixed first, or violence like this will likely keep happening, say experts.
