Bangladesh seeks clarification on ‘Akhand Bharat’ mural in new Parliament building

Akhand Bharat: After Nepal and Pakistan, Bangladesh has also asked for clarifications from India on the mural depicted in the new Parliament building.

This mural depicts parts of Bangladesh in India.

Bangladesh Minister of State for Foreign Affairs ShaharyarAlam has asked his country’s mission in New Delhi to get an explanation from the MEA on the matter. However, India’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs hasn’t responded yet to Alam’s concerns. On Monday, during an interaction with the Bangladeshi media, the minister said there was no politics in the mural matter. Nevertheless, Alam has asked the mission in Delhi to get an official word on the issue.
Last week, Arindam Bagchi, MEA’s spokesperson said in a press briefing, “The mural…depicts the spread of the Ashokan empire and the idea of responsible and people-oriented governance that [Emperor Ashoka] adopted and propagated.”Several social media commentators in Bangladesh talked about the mural last week. However, it hasn’t become a controversial topic.

Nepal also sought clarification

The Nepalese political leadership had also urged Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal to raise the mural issue before the Indians. Bagchi in his press briefing said this issue wasn’t discussed formally between the two countries.
Dahal was visiting New Delhi last week to discuss bilateral ties.

Akhand Bharat

Some BJP leaders called the mural representing Akhand Bharat or Unbroken India. This map, which is prominently displayed in the new Parliament building shows many ancient cities like Lumbini and Kapilvastu.
