BBC defends editorial independence after Twitter labels it ‘government-funded media’

Shortly after, the BBC disputed Twitter’s claim that it provides “public services,” claiming that it does so by charging licence payments.

Twitter defined the term as follows, “State-financed media organisations with editorial independence, like the BBC in the UK or NPR in the US, are not defined as state-affiliated media for the purposes of this policy,” running the risk of conflict with the UK-based media outlet. Twitter’s policy outlined the distinction between the term and “state-affiliated media,” claiming the latter lacks editorial independence and is subject to government control. The BBC is a “government-funded media,” meaning that it receives funding from the government but maintains editorial freedom. By the way, Twitter’s policy section listed NPR, a media organisation based in the United States, as a government-funded outlet.

The business declared that it was in discussions with the social media platform to “resolve the issue as quickly as possible.” The BBC declared in a statement that it has always been independent. Through the licence fee, the British public supports us. It should be remembered that British legislation mandates a $197 annual licence charge in order to access live television broadcasts or streaming in the UK. Residents of UK households must pay the fee in accordance with a government regulation in order to access the services.
