Biden says Chinese President is a dictator; Beijing hits back

Joe Biden: US President Joe Biden told his supporters that the Chinese President is a dictator. Biden was attending a fundraiser in California.

He said, "The reason why Xi Jinping got very upset in terms of when I shot that balloon down with two box cars full of spy equipment in it was he didn't know it was there. "

The President also said, "That's a great embarrassment for dictators. When they didn't know what happened. That wasn't supposed to be going where it was. It was blown off course."

Biden’s remarks came days after Secretary of State Anthony Blinken’s visit to China in June.

‘Open provocation”

Reacting to the President’s remarks, China said they were “extremely absurd” and “irresponsible.” Foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said Biden’s remarks “seriously violated facts, diplomatic protocol and China's political dignity.”

She also said that Biden’s remarks about the Chinese President “are an open political provocation.”

When asked by reporters about the balloon in American skies, Ning said, “that the passage of the balloon through U.S. airspace had been unintended and caused by circumstances beyond its control.”

Biden has often said that China is an autocracy and is ruled by dictators. Beijing has countered the US by saying the former has a Chinese-style democracy.

The leaders of both countries are expected to meet in November 2023.

Playing down the issue

Analysts are playing down this issue. They feel it won’t hurt the current state of Sino-US relations.

Yun Sun, who looks after the Chinese programme at the Stimson Centre in Washington, says the Americans want to “let this quietly go away.”

It is noteworthy that Blinken’s visit to Beijing happened after 5 years. Both countries want to stabilize the tensions between them that have risen due to trade wars, Taiwan and the spy balloon.
