In spite of escalating international calls for a halt to hostilities that have led to an increase in lawlessness, explosions shook Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, on Tuesday, the fourth day of fighting that has took almost 200 lives.
Between the forces of two generals who overthrew the government in a coup in 2021—Army Chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, who is in charge of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), there has been a power struggle for weeks that ended in deadly bloodshed on Saturday.
The US claimed that one of its diplomatic convoys was fired upon, and the EU claimed that its ambassador was attacked at home, underscoring the instability.
Medical and other supplies have been looted according to aid organisations.
There are fears that the violence, which has involved airstrikes, artillery, and heavy shooting, will spread to other regions of the enormous nation of northeast Africa.
In a statement, the G7 foreign ministers gathering in Japan demanded that the combatants "end hostilities immediately" as loud explosions could be heard in Khartoum, where militiamen were swarming the streets wearing turbans and fatigues.
