Breaking Barriers! Toronto school board tackles caste discrimination in schools, first in Canada to address the issue

Canada: Toronto’s school board has approached a provincial human rights organisation for assistance in developing a framework to address the issue, becoming the first in Canada to acknowledge caste discrimination in the city’s schools. On Wednesday, the Toronto District School Board approved a proposal to that effect that was made by board member Yalini Rajakulasingam. The resolution received votes from 16 trustees, and 5 trustees opposed it.

The South Asian Diaspora Speaks Out

The action deals with a subject that is significant to the South Asian diaspora in the area, especially the Indian and Hindu groups. By a city council resolution, Seattle became the first American city to forbid caste discrimination a few weeks prior. The caste system in India is one of the most ancient examples of rigid social segregation.

Toronto School Board Seeks Assistance

Rajakulasingam stated, “This motion is not about separation; it is about fostering healing and empowering communities and giving them safer schools that students need. The Toronto school board and Ontario’s human rights commission should collaborate, according to Rajakulasingam. Ontario is Canada’s most populous province. The caste system, which has been in place for thousands of years, gives upper castes various benefits while suppressing lower castes. The Dalit community has been classified as “untouchables” and is at the bottom of the Hindu caste system.

Toronto District School Board’s Efforts to Empower Students

The hierarchy of the caste system is a difficult topic of discussion both in India and overseas, and religion plays a role in the debate. Some claim that discrimination is no longer common. Many students from lower castes have recently landed IT jobs in the West thanks to Indian government programmes that reserve seats for them at prestigious Indian universities. Caste discrimination, according to activists who oppose it, should be illegal because it is similar to other forms of discrimination like racism.
