“China’s Covid-19 surge shouldn’t worry India”

Covid-19

Covid-19: A top Indian health expert has said India needn’t worry about the June Covid surge in China. This expert works with INSACOG and declined to be identified.
INSCACOG or Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium comprises the Ministry of Health, the Department of Biotechnology, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and the Indian Council of Medical Research.
Several medical and health experts have predicted that Covid-19 related infections in China are likely to rise from 45 million per week in May to 65 million in June. These infections may reach India because many airlines have resumed their operations to and from China.

No need to worry

This expert pointed out that the XBB variant will drive infections in China. However, since Indians have already been exposed to this variant in November-December 2022, we don’t have to worry much.
Last year, there was a spurt in infections but it didn’t result in large-scale hospitalizations. The XBB variant is considered less dangerous than the variant which spread all over the world in 2020 and 2021.
Moreover, Indians have built immunity during 2020-2022. There were extended periods of lockdown in the country interspersed with people’s movements outside their homes. This resulted in increased immunity in Indians and thus India doesn’t have to worry too much.

What is XBB?

This Covid-19 virus is a combination of BA.2.10.1 and BA.2.7 subvariants and resists immune systems. XBB was first reported in August 2022 and was responsible for the sharp surge of infections in Singapore.
Last December, the Consortium reported that XBB samples accounted for 63% of the entire population IN India. The report also says that the vaccination drive by India early last year has also helped Indians build immunity against XBB.
However, large-scale lockdowns in China haven’t strengthened the immunity of the Chinese, the report explains.
