China opens up

For the first time since early 2020, the promise of outbound tourism has been rekindled by China's abandonment of COVID-zero policy.  Beginning January 8, travellers entering China, including Chinese nationals who are travelling home, will no longer be subject to five-day quarantine. Another country that tightened its border on Tuesday was Japan, which will start requiring tests for all visitors from China on Friday. It is now thought of as a short-term emergency measure against the rapidly increasing number of COVID infections there.

Additionally requiring COVID testing for visitors from China, Japan, and several other Asian nations last week was India.

China's foreign ministry stated on Tuesday in response to inquiries over the criteria for Chinese visitors from India and Japan that "COVID measures should be scientific, modest, and should not disrupt the natural flow of individuals."
