Dalai Lama anoints US-born Mongolian boy third highest leader in Buddhism: Report

According to a Times report, the Dalai Lama has named a Mongolian child who was born in the United States as the 10th Khalkha Jetsun Dhampa Rinpoche, the third highest position in Tibetan Buddhism.

The Buddhist leader, who is in exile in Dharamshala, was reportedly pictured with the eight-year-old boy at a ceremony on March 8 there. According to the report, there was mixed reaction to the announcement of the ceremony because there was still a chance that China might object to the decision.

China, which has said that it will only recognise Buddhist leaders selected by its own government, is expected to take exception at the decision to elevate the boy to the position of third highest lama.

The eight-year-old has a twin brother, is the son of a professor at a university, and is the grandson of a former parliamentarian from Mongolia.
