Donald Trump-Peace Deal And Threats Together?

In what is seen by many as a never-before rhetoric, Trump has been issuing calls for peace and using abusive language while giving open threats to the Iranian leadership. Meanwhile, Iran has rejected all ceasefire and peace proposals by USA. It has instead called for a permanent end to the Middle East crisis and lifting of all sanctions on the West Asian nation.

In a stern warning to Iran, Trump said that the United States would not hesitate to launch massive attacks on Iran’s transportation and energy infrastructure if the strategic Strait of Hormuz is not reopened unconditionally by the Iranian leadership by Tuesday deadline.

Markets Crash, Brent Crude Surge

Global markets crashed after Trump reiterated his decision to attack Iran if a peace deal is not reached before his stipulated deadline. Sensex fell over 40 points while Nifty went down to 22850. On the other hand, the US West Texas Intermediate contract for May went up 0.78 percent to reach $112.41 a barrel. In contrast, international benchmark Brent Crude prices surged 0.68 percent to reach $109.77 a barrel.

Since the war started on February 28, Iran has closed the Hormuz Strait that connects the world markets to the Persian Gulf. Interestingly, approximately 20 percent of the world’s supplies pass via the Strait before the war started. Its closure has triggered the largest disruption of oil supply in history. Jet fuel, crude, gasoline and diesel prices have surged dramatically since the Iran war started. Several market analysts have expressed concerns that oil prices across the world would not come down to the same levels before the war, even if the war is stopped now.
