On March 23, a drone struck a building on a coalition base in northeast Syria, killing a U.S. contractor and injuring five U.S. service members and another U.S. contractor, according to the Pentagon.

The unmanned aerial vehicle was identified as being of Iranian origin by the intelligence community, according to a statement issued late on March 23 by the Defense Department.

U.S. Central Command forces responded with “precision airstrikes,” according to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, hitting locations in eastern Syria used by was via to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Videos posted on social media overnight claimed to show explosions in Deir Ez-Zor, a vital area of Syria that borders Iraq and has oil deposits.

“The airstrikes were conducted in response to today’s attack as well as a series of recent attacks against Coalition forces in Syria by groups affiliated with the IRGC,” Mr. Austin said.

Syrian forces and militia groups supported by Iran

Syrian forces and militia groups supported by Iran are in charge of the region, which has also recently been the focus of alleged Israeli airstrikes aimed at Iranian supply routes.

The strikes, which took place during the revered Muslim month of Ramadan when Muslims fast, received no immediate response from Iran.

Mr. Austin claimed that at President Joseph Biden’s request, he authorised the retaliatory strikes.

“As President Biden has made clear, we will take all necessary measures to defend our people and will always respond at a time and place of our choosing,” Mr. Austin said. “No group will strike our troops with impunity.”

According to the Pentagon, three more injured service members and the injured contractor were taken to medical facilities in Iraq, while two of the injured service men were treated locally.
