Earthquake: Papua New Guinea Experiences Earthquake of 7.6 Magnitude

Earthquake: On Sunday, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake allegedly caused property damage and frightened locals in Papua New Guinea’s Eastern New Guinea region.

No casualties were reported, and there was no official confirmation of any property damage.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 80 km (49.7 miles).

After the earthquake, the US tsunami warning system issued a warning, but later declared the threat to be over.

Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology stated that there was no immediate tsunami threat to the country.

Social media was used by people in Papua New Guinea to share pictures and videos of crumbling roads, wrecked cars and houses, and products falling off grocery shelves.

In Papua New Guinea, which is situated on the Pacific Ocean’s “Ring of Fire,” a hotspot for seismic activity caused by friction between tectonic plates, earthquakes are frequent.

In 2018, a 7.5-magnitude earthquake that shook PNG’s isolated mountainous highlands killed more than 100 people and severely damaged thousands of dwellings.
