Eight killed six wounded in Russian university shooting

A gunman opened fire in a university in the Russian city of Perm University located around 1,300 kilometres (800 miles) east of the capital, Moscow on Monday morning, leaving eight people dead and six wounded, according to Russia’s Investigative Committee.

Investigators previously said that five people were killed and another six wounded.

Investigative Committee representative Svetlana Petrenko told mediapersons that the shooter was wounded during his arrest. His identity has been established, he has been detained and further investigation is underway, she added.

Local media identified the gunman as an 18-year-old student who had earlier posted a social media photo of himself posing with a rifle, helmet and ammunition.

The regional heath ministry said that among those wounded were injuries both from the shooting and from trying to escape the building.

Russian news agency TASS has reported that an unidentified man has started shooting inside one of the buildings of Russia’s Perm State University a few hours ago. Video footage from the site of the incident was also released by the news agency.

The video footage of the incident shows several people jumping out of the first-floor windows to save themselves from the shooter inside the building. Reports are stating that several people have been wounded by the perpetrator during the shooting spree.

The last such deadly attack took place in May 2021, when a 19-year-old gunman opened fire in his old school in the central Russian city of Kazan, killing nine people.

Investigators said that man suffered from a brain disorder. But he was deemed fit to receive a license for the semi-automatic shotgun he used in the attack.

On the day of that attack — one of the worst in recent Russian history — President Vladimir Putin called for a review of gun control laws.

In November 2019, a 19-year-old student in the far eastern town of Blagoveshchensk opened fire at his college, killing one classmate and injuring three other people before shooting and killing himself.

In October 2018, another teenage gunman killed 20 people at a Kerch technical college in Crimea, the peninsula Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014.
