Elon Musk: The US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) has approved Neuralink to conduct clinical trials by placing implants in human brains. These trials, Musk claims, will help improve the conditions of people having brain-related disorders.
People in the know claim that the USFDA had previously declined Neuralink’s application on several grounds. The federal regulator was concerned about how the implant’s lithium battery will affect the brain. There were also concerns regarding the device’s wires migrating elsewhere inside the brain and how the extraction of the implant will affect the surrounding brain tissue.
What is Neuralink?
Neuralink aims to connect human brains with computers. The ultimate goal of this company is to help visually impaired people to recover their sight. Neuralink, with its technology, broadly wants to help people battling paralysis, schizophrenia and other brain-related disorders. This company was launched in 2019.
In December 2019, Musk demonstrated how a computer chip placed in a monkey’s skull allowed the animal to play video games, move a cursor and perform similar tasks. However, some US lawmakers charged Neuralink with treating animals cruelly while performing trials on them.
In the same presentation, Elon Musk vowed that Neuralink would be able to perform its tests on humans in 2020.
Backed by many
Neuralink has had many backers. Initially funded by Elon Musk, this Company has raised funds from Google Ventures, OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Peter Thiel. Crunchbase says that so far, Neuralink has raised approximately $350 million. Another report says this Company is valued at approximately $1 billion.
Elon Musk has launched several companies, including Tesla Inc. and Space X. In 2022, he acquired Twitter for $44 billion. Neuralink is the smallest business entity in his portfolio. However, it can scale up quickly considering there are more than 5 million Americans who have some form of central nervous system disorder.
