FIFA Women’s World Cup : Ada Hegerberg reacts after missing a scoring chance against New Zealand

The FIFA Women’s World Cup has seen several noteworthy achievements within six days of its start. It has already become the most attended tournament in its 32-year history, with over 1.5 million tickets sold. South Korea’s Casey Phair became the youngest-ever player in World Cup history at the age of 16 years and 26 days during the match against Colombia. Linda Caicedo, at 18 years old, scored in Colombia’s 2-0 win, making her the first player to score in the finals of the under-17, under-20, and senior World Cup within 11 months.

Philippines secured their first-ever win in the World Cup

In a historic moment, the Philippines secured their first-ever win in the World Cup, defeating co-hosts New Zealand 1-0 through Sarina Bolden’s impressive header. Additionally, the tournament witnessed its first hattrick, scored by Ary Borges, who became the first Brazilian male or female to achieve this feat on their World Cup debut.

However, some star forwards have not lived up to their reputation so far. Canada’s Christine Sinclair, with 190 international goals (the most by any man or woman), missed a penalty, as did two-time World Cup winner Alex Morgan of the USA, whose saved spot-kick against Vietnam was her first in regulation time in a World Cup finals match. Talismanic Australian Sam Kerr has been unable to start due to an injury, and Ada Hegerberg, a prominent player from Olympic Lyon and Norway, has also faced setbacks.

Norway, despite being former world champions in 1995, runners-up in 1991, and Olympic gold medallists in 2000, is struggling in the current tournament. They drew 0-0 against Switzerland, leaving them at the bottom of their group with just one point from two games. Their lack of wins in the last six games and goal drought in the last four major competitions put their World Cup future in jeopardy.

In Norway’s opening game, it was New Zealand striker Hannah Wilkinson who stood out, leading her team to a 1-0 victory. This win marked New Zealand’s first in 16 World Cup games in over three decades.
