Former Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, has been accused of favouring India and pertaining a criminal conspiracy by praising pro-Modi policy. A FIR has also been lodged against him for the "provocative speeches" he made during his London visits which intentionally defamed "Pakistan's institutions".
The FIR was lodged against the former PM on October 1 by a resident of Sahara Police Station's jurisdiction.
“Nawaz Sharif's speech was aimed to indirectly benefit his friend Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” stated the FIR. It also accused the former prime minister's speeches of defaming Pakistan's high courts and presenting the armed forces in bad light in front of the international community.
According to Pakistan's local channel, Geo News, the case was filed under the provisions of the Pakistan Penal Code for criminal conspiracy against the the Pakistan Muslim League (N) chief.
Now, in the latest, it has been reported that Imran Khan government has now distanced itself from the charges filed aginst Sharif.
Science and technology minister Fawad Chaudhry tweeted that Prime Minister Khan was unaware of the sedition case. “The prime minister was not aware when I brought into his notice that an FIR has been registered [in Lahore] in which Nawaz Sharif and others have been nominated,” Fawad said, adding Khan “expressed strong displeasure. Let’s see what happens.”
Earlier this month, Pakistan had failed to execute a non-bailable arrest warrant against the former Prime Minister who was only granted permission to fly abroad for his health related concerns in November last year.
Meanwhile Nawaz had earlier slammed PTI, calling out the incumbent government for what he termed its "dual standards of accountability". He also said that he is not someone who can be silenced and no one should try to do so. He also blamed Prime Minister Imran Khan for all the turmoil in the country.
