The Government of India has issued an advisory for Indian citizens and students living in Canada. In a tweet made by Indian Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi, it has been said, ‘There has been a sharp increase in incidents of hate crime, sectoral violence and anti-India activities in Canada. The Ministry of External Affairs and our High Commission Consulate in Canada have taken up these incidents with the Canadian authorities and requested them to investigate the above offenses and take appropriate action. The perpetrators of these crimes have not yet been brought to justice in Canada.
The Government of India advisory further states, “In view of the increasing incidence of offenses mentioned above, Indian citizens and students of India in Canada, Indians visiting Canada for travel/education are advised to take due precautions.” And be careful. Indian citizens and students residing in Canada can register with the High Commission of India in Ottawa or the Consulate General of India in Toronto and Vancouver through their respective websites or through the help portal madad.gov.in. The registration will enable the High Commission of India and the Consulate General of India to better connect with its citizens in Canada in case of any need or emergency.
In one of its sharpest remarks so far on separatist activities in Canada against India, the Foreign Office said yesterday that it found it “extremely objectionable” that a politically motivated exercise by extremist elements was allowed to take place in a friendly country. Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi on Thursday described the so-called Khalistan referendum in Canada as “a ridiculous exercise organized by extremists and fundamentalist elements”, saying, “You all are aware of the history of violence in this regard.” The MEA’s response came after 3 diplomatic messages from South Block, which saw little action by Ontario to prevent the so-called ‘referendum’ held in Brampton, Canada, on 19 September, asking whether Indian Punjab should be declared a separate country or not.
Canada reportedly said that its citizens have the right to assemble and express their views peacefully and legally. The Canadian government has also said that it respects India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and will not recognize the so-called referendum. The Indian Foreign Ministry expressed dissatisfaction with Canada’s response to the so-called Khalistani referendum. MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said on Thursday that the Indian government will continue to pressurize the Canadian government to take action in the matter.
