G20 Srinagar: Pakistan lodges protest with countries for attending the Kashmir event

G20 Srinagar: Pakistan Charge de Affairs has lodged a protest with the countries who attended the G20 meeting in Kashmir Valley from May 22 to 24. India hosted 59 international delegates at the G20 Tourism Working Group meeting in Srinagar. Islamabad’s top strategic partners China, Egypt, and Oman did not attend the meet.

Pakistan lobbied with the countries that are part of Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and were invited to the G20 meet. Pakistan urged them to boycott the event. India hosted the event successfully and only Islamabad’s top strategic partners China, Egypt, and Oman did not attend.

Pak urged OIC to boycott event

Pakistan had argued that Jammu & Kashmir was disputed territory. It said OIC countries should boycott the G20 meet as it was being held at a disputed territory. Only Islamabad’s top strategic partners did not attend. Egypt and Oman are among the nine countries invited as guests by India for the G20 Summit in September.

Three travel industry representatives from Turkey and two travel industry representatives from Saudi Arabia came though there was no official representation.

Among OIC countries, Nigeria was represented by its deputy high commissioner and three delegates from the high commission. Bangladesh was represented by its high commissioner, UAE by one official and two travel industry representatives, and Indonesia by one embassy representative.

In an embarrassment to China and Pakistan, the United Nations was represented by its Headquarters, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), and the International Labour Organization (ILO).

Bilawal Bhutto visits POK, thanks China

On May 23, Pakistan foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari went to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK) and addressed a meeting in Bagh slamming the Narendra Modi government for hosting the Srinagar event. He thanked “all-weather friend” China, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey for boycotting the G20 Srinagar meeting. Bilawal said Modi government was maligning Pakistan and the Kashmiri people.

The J&K administration, including lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha, the G20 secretariat, the tourism ministry, and the national security agencies ensured that the Kashmir event was free of incident.
