G7 statement: The group of seven nations (G7) have expressed concerns over China's "rapid expansion of its nuclear arsenal". The top global leaders who met in Hiroshima, released a joint statement that cautioned the world against China's "rapid expansion of its nuclear arsenal."
They also emphasised that G7 is not turning inward, as they convened in Hiroshima with the Ukrainian conflict looming in the background.
The joint statement targeted both Beijing and Moscow separately as it expressed concern about China's "accelerating build-up of its nuclear arsenal without transparency (or) meaningful dialogue,".
‘Not adopting insular approach’
"We are not withdrawing or adopting an insular approach. Nonetheless, we recognise that economic resilience necessitates risk reduction and diversification," the statement read.
Moreover, the nations conveyed that their intention is not to devise policies that harm China or impede its economic progress.
"A thriving China that adheres to international rules would be in the global interest."
China's growing influence in international trade market
The G7 nations are apprehensive about China's growing influence in the international trade market, solidified by its involvement in supply chains encompassing semiconductors and critical minerals. With this communiqué, the G7 seeks to outline a unified strategy for future engagements with the world's second-largest economy.
In a separate statement, the G7 members—United States, Japan, Germany, France, United Kingdom, Italy, and Canada—warmed against using trade as a weapon as the resulting consequences could be grave.
The G7 also underscored the challenges posed by Russia's invasion of Ukraine and tensions with China regarding Taiwan and economic security.
The statement was released shortly after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Hiroshima, transported by a French government aircraft.

After arrival, Zelensky donning his customary olive green fatigues, swiftly proceeded to a waiting car. He expressed in a tweet, "Japan. G7. Important meetings with partners and friends of Ukraine."
In Hiroshima, world leaders from the seven most powerful nations delicately navigate multiple pressing global concerns, including climate change, AI, poverty, economic instability, nuclear proliferation, and foremost, the Ukrainian conflict.
