Greece: 5.5-magnitude earthquake causes tsunami fears, thousands asked to relocate to higher ground

Greece: A Monday morning earthquake in Crete, Greece, with a magnitude of 5.5, raised tsunami concerns and caused the monitoring organisations to issue a warning urging residents of coastal areas to leave their homes and seek refuge.

EMSC’s tweet:

According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the earthquake occurred on Monday at 1.25 am local time 60 kilometres (37 miles) northeast of Siteia in Greece (EMSC). According to the independent monitoring organisation, it happened 80 km below the surface.
The EMSC issued a warning, advising anyone who were near the water to “get away from the coast and seek a higher place.”

On Twitter, the EMSC posted a number of safety recommendations.

However, Greek officials have not yet released such a warning

According to reports, North Africa was affected by the earthquake. In any of the affected locations, there have been no reports of injuries or structural damage.

According to local reports, the demand on the network in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake caused the mobile phone systems in Crete to temporarily become overloaded.
