Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is currently in jail after being convicted in the Toshakhana corruption case, has asked his lawyers to get him freed from Attock prison. According to Khan's lawyers, the 70-year-old cricketer-turned-politician does not want to stay in a jail that is filled with flies during the day and insects at night.
Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party petitioned the Islamabad High Court on Monday to transfer the party president from Punjab province's Attock jail to Rawalpindi's high-security Adiala prison. The appeal also demanded that the High Court send him to a jail with A-class amenities, and that his family, attorneys, and physician Dr Faisal Sultan be permitted to speak with him.
According to sources in the Attock jail, Khan asked his lawyer to "take him out" during a meeting at the jail. "I don't want to stay in jail; take me out," Khan was quoted as saying by prison officials.
Kept in distressing conditions: Naeem Haider Panjotha
Khan's counsel, Naeem Haider Panjotha, who visited with the former Pakistan prime minister in jail, said he was kept in "distressing" conditions and was supplied with "C-Class jail facilities."
On Saturday, the former Prime Minister was arrested immediately after an Islamabad trial court convicted him guilty of "corrupt practises" in the Toshakhana case.
He later challenged the conviction and three-year jail sentence by a trial court, saying the verdict by a "biased" judge was a "slap in the face of due process and fair trial" and "a gross travesty of justice".
According to the appeal, the trial judge reached his decisions based on a "predisposed mind" rather than the merits of the case. Khan also claimed that his counsel was not allowed to offer arguments. He called the trial court judge "biassed, a nullity in the eyes of the law, and liable to be set aside."
Imran Khan is accused of misusing his premiership from 2018 to 2022 to acquire and sell presents in state possession worth more than Rs 14 crores obtained during foreign tours.
