Imran Khan to face long legal battle over disqualification verdict

The disqualification of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan for five years in the Toshakhana case has made his political life difficult. They will have to fight a long legal battle to regain their political ground.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Friday disqualified Imran Khan from contesting elections for five years. He has been convicted of hiding the money received from selling expensive gifts received from abroad during his tenure as Prime Minister. The membership of the Pakistan Parliament has also been taken away from Imran Khan.

However, there is uncertainty about whether Imran’s five-year disqualification will serve the term of the current parliament or it will be for another five years from the date of the commission’s order. The term of the current National Assembly is commencing from August 2018 and will be completed in 2023. Although Khan had resigned in April itself, it was not accepted. As such, his disqualification will end with the term of the current Parliament.

Immediately after being disqualified by the Election Commission, former PM Imran Khan held two consecutive meetings of his party Pakistan Tehreek Insaf (PTI). After this, the 70-year-old former cricketer dismissed the allegations leveled against him in his recorded message. He said that they will fight the legal battle against disqualification and not take to the streets. Better that Khan decided to take the legal route, however, it is winding down. It can take months for the legal action to be completed. The former PM will first have to climb the stairs of the High Court and the Supreme Court.

Pakistani newspaper Dawn has released a report about Khan’s future legal battle. It said that the Pakistan Tehreek Insaf Party has decided to challenge the disqualification first in the Islamabad High Court (IHC). At the same time, he will also face trial in a sessions court, which is related to a complaint of hiding the details of the gifts received by him. The commission has sent this complaint received by him to the lower court. Khan is currently a member of parliament from the Mianwali district of Punjab, also known as NA-95.

The legal wing of PTI expected the opposite decision of the commission, so a petition was drafted through the wing’s chief and Senator Syed Ali Zafar.
