India Again Detracts from Voting at the UNGA on the Resolution Condemning Russia. Watch Video

Russia-Ukraine War: India stated that its decision to abstain was “compatible” with its “well-thought-out national position” in the UN General Assembly on a draft resolution on Wednesday denouncing Russia’s referendums and annexation of four Ukrainian areas.

India has consistently argued that no solution should ever be found at the expense of human life, according to Ruchira Kamboj, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, who was asked to explain the country’s position. No one has an interest in tensions and violence escalating. In the “Explanation of Vote,” she stated, “We have advocated that all efforts be made for an early suspension of hostilities and an urgent return to the road of discussion and diplomacy.

The resolution was titled “Territorial Integrity of Ukraine: Defending the Principles of the UN Charter.”

143 countries voted in favour of the resolution, four opposed it, and 35, including India, abstained, leading to its adoption.

The moment the resolution was approved, the entire room erupted in cheers.

“We must continue to use all available diplomatic avenues if we are to achieve peace. In order to achieve an immediate ceasefire and a peaceful end of the crisis, we truly hope that peace negotiations would resume soon. India is prepared to assist with any de-escalation efforts, according to Kamboj.

There are other urgent concerns at hand, some of which the resolution passed today did not sufficiently address. Our choice to abstain is in line with our well-considered national perspective, she continued.

India also voiced its worry about the developed world being made to suffer significant collateral damage. “It is imperative that the voice of the global south be heard and their valid concerns properly handled because developing countries bear the brunt of the conflict’s effects on petroleum, food, and fertiliser supplies. Therefore, we must refrain from taking actions that make an already troubled world economy worse,” the Indian PR added.

India had voted against a draft UN Security Council resolution last month that would have declared the Russian referendums and annexation of four Ukrainian areas illegitimate.

The only countries to vote against the resolution were Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Syria, and Nicaragua. Along with India, many other Asian nations chose to abstain. China, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam were among them. No BRICS nation sided with the West in the referendum. The resolution urged that Russia immediately withdraw its military from all regions of Ukraine and deemed the referendum and annexation illegitimate.
