India-Canada Relation: In light of recent events, Canada has updated its travel advisory for its residents in India and urged them to “stay vigilant and exercise caution” due to calls for protests and some “negative sentiment” towards Canada on social media.

After Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made startling claims about the “potential” involvement of Indian agents in the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, 45, on Canadian soil on June 18 in British Columbia, tensions between India and Canada erupted. In 2020, India deemed Nijjar to be a terrorist.

India strongly rejected the accusations

In retaliation for Ottawa’s decision to dismiss an Indian official over the matter, India strongly rejected the accusations as “absurd” and “motivated” and expelled a senior Canadian ambassador.

Shared intelligence among Five Eyes partners

Prior to Justin Trudeau, the prime minister of Canada, accusing India of killing Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Khalistani fanatic, on Canadian soil, a US envoy recently disclosed that “shared intelligence among Five Eyes partners” did exist.

The Five Eyes Intelligence Alliance, often known as FVEY, is a cooperative intelligence-sharing network made up of the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The basis of this alliance, which emerged in the years after World War II, is mutual trust and the exchange of private information among its member countries.
