India-UK Relations

India-UK Relations: Rishi Sunak, who is about to become the first prime minister of Indian descent in Britain, recently stated that he wants to reform the UK-India relationship to make it more of a two-way exchange that gives UK students and businesses easier access to India.
The 42-year-old British-born Indian-origin Tory MP for Richmond in Yorkshire promised to steer the nation through the "tough times" of inflation and create a better, safer Britain when speaking to a group of British Indian Conservative Party members in August.

The majority of the cheering throng were adamant that Mr. Sunak's Indian ancestry and background as an ethnic minority had nothing to do with the race to become British Prime Minister.

The former chancellor greeted the crowd at an event hosted by the Conservative Friends of India (CFIN) diaspora group in north London by using a mixture of traditional greetings like "namaste, salaam, khem cho, and kidda," and even broke into Hindi to say, "aap sab mere parivar ho (you all are my family)".

Rishi about India-UK Relations

"We are aware of the value of the UK-India relationship. When asked about bilateral ties by CFIN co-chair Reena Ranger," he responded, "We represent the live bridge between our two countries".

"While we are all quite aware of the possibility for the UK to sell goods and conduct business in India, we need to approach that relationship differently since there is so much that the UK can learn from India."

"It's not just a one-way relationship; it's a two-way relationship, and that's the kind of change I want to bring to that relationship," he had said.  "I want to make sure that it's easy for our students to also travel to India and learn, that it's also easy for our companies and Indian companies to work together," he further said.

Rishi Sunak's Background

The son of a general practitioner of Indian descent named Yashvir and a pharmacist named Usha, who was born in the United Kingdom, spoke frequently about his immigrant roots during the previous election campaign. He also mentioned making history by lighting Diwali diyas at 11 Downing Street as the first Indian Chancellor of the Exchequer.

"On a lovely, sunny evening in October, sixty years after my Naniji boarded a plane for East Africa, her great-granddaughters—my children—played in the street outside our house, painted Rangoli on the door, lighted sparklers and diyas, and celebrated Diwali like so many other families. In contrast, the door was the door to No. 11, and the roadway was Downing Street, according to Mr. Sunak's campaign film from a few months ago.

As he retaliated against criticism of his wife Akshata Murthy's family fortune, he also included an obviously emotional reference to his in-laws, Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy and Sudha Murthy.

"During the recent tense television discussions over the past few months , he stated, "I'm actually really proud of what my parents-in-law built.

As a devoted Hindu, Rishi Sunak frequently attends the Southampton temple where he was born, and his children Anoushka and Krishna have strong ties to India.
He recently related how Anoushka and her classmates performed Kuchipudi at Westminster Abbey in June for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
