Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump on January 27, 2025, marking their first direct conversation since Trump’s inauguration for his second term. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing bilateral relations and working together for global peace, prosperity, and security.

“Delighted to speak with my dear friend President Donald Trump. Congratulated him on his historic second term. We are committed to a mutually beneficial and trusted partnership. We will work together for the welfare of our people and towards global peace, prosperity, and security,” PM Modi said in a social media message.

Leaders Commit to Strengthening India-U.S. Partnership

President Trump was sworn into office for his second term in a grand ceremony in Washington, D.C., attended by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar as India’s representative. Following the inauguration, Mr. Jaishankar participated in a quadrilateral ministerial meeting with newly appointed U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, and Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya.

The conversation between PM Modi and President Trump highlighted the leaders’ ongoing rapport, built during Trump’s first tenure from 2017 to 2021. Their previous collaborations included the "Howdy Modi" event in Houston in 2019 and President Trump’s visit to India in February 2020.

President Trump has also engaged with leaders from El Salvador, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the U.K., and Bahrain since taking office. His administration has announced a new immigration policy for Colombia, with immigration, H1B visas, and tariffs expected to feature prominently in India-U.S. discussions.

PM Modi had earlier congratulated President Trump on January 20, expressing eagerness to collaborate for the benefit of both nations and the world. As both nations navigate evolving global challenges, their leaders’ commitment to strengthening ties reflects a shared vision for a stable and prosperous future.
