India US Trade Deal: Donald Trump’s Reps Arrive For Negotiations, Will Sanity Prevail This Time Around ?

A US delegation has arrived in New Delhi to resume talks on a long-pending India-US trade deal. While Trump’s aide Peter Navarro says India is “coming to the table,” sharp disagreements over tariffs and oil trade remain.

India- US- Trade- Deal

India US Trade Deal: The long-awaited trade deal between India and the US is once again being talked about in New Delhi. There is hope that the American team, led by Brendan Lynch, can break the deadlock now that they have arrived in the capital. Officials say that this meeting is a “precursor” to the sixth round of formal negotiations, which had to be put off because of disagreements caused by new US tariffs on Indian goods.

This round is seen by both sides as a chance to change the tone and find places where both sides can agree.

Sharp Words from Navarro

A top Trump aide named Peter Navarro set the tone by saying that India is now “coming to the table.” He said that Trump had noticed Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s cheerful tone online, and that was something that he liked.

In spite of this, Navarro did not shy away from bringing up problems. He said that India’s high tariffs and other hurdles were still some of the highest in the world. He also said that Indian refiners were making money by processing Russian crude oil after the war in Ukraine started, which the US sees as unfair trade.

India’s Well-Thought-Out Response

On the Indian side, Rajesh Agarwal, a negotiator from the Commerce Ministry, stated that this meeting will not be officially called the sixth round, but it will lead up to it. India keeps saying that its policies are necessary to protect its own businesses and keep its energy trade strategically independent.

Still, New Delhi knows it can’t let the talks fail completely, especially since better relations with Washington would be good for its exporters and bring in more investment.

Will Sanity Prevail This Time Around?

Getting better access to the Indian market is very important for the US. India’s main goals are still to avoid more tariff penalties and make sure that its products are treated more fairly. The US government is under a lot of pressure to get things done before the election cycle, and India’s government is trying to balance its needs at home with its responsibilities to the world.

There are a lot of political issues at the table this week, but the big question is whether practicality will win out. A breakthrough could lead to one of the world’s most important trade relationships. On the other hand, a deadlock could make both sides even less trusting of each other.
