Jobs in Oman: Expats working in Oman who see subsistence farming in some remote areas may be shocked to discover more about the country's economic past. Oman used to be a major trading force in the Middle East and off the coast of East Africa.
Omanization and the Workforce
In Oman, there are now 1,809,000 individuals working. However, in 2014, over 85% of them were foreign residents. As more young Omanis graduate from high school and college, they take over skilled labour, clerical employment, and middle management positions.
Because of the government's and most firms' "Omanization" programme, the majority of foreign-born employees working in Oman do not have a graduate degree or have even completed secondary school. These migrant workers arrive in Oman as unskilled labourers. On the other end of the spectrum, well-qualified expatriates are hired for executive roles or highly specialised employment.
Agriculture
Agriculture, unsurprisingly for a desert country, is of limited importance to both natives and foreign immigrants working in Oman. Aside from fishing and camel breeding, the agricultural industry, which includes raising cattle and growing dates, limes, coconuts, and bananas, is limited to the Al Batinah coastal plain in the northeast and the rich province of Dhofar in the south. Agriculture provides only 1.3% of Oman's GDP overall.
Industry
The secondary sector is significantly more important to the labour force than agriculture, accounting for 55% of the country's GDP. While the light industries are small, the petrochemical industry, copper mining, aluminium smelting, and cement manufacturing are thriving.
The Omani government also wishes to encourage specialists to harness the country's estimated 850 billion cubic metres of natural gas reserves. Nonetheless, it's not unexpected that Petroleum Development Oman (owned partly by the government and partly by multi-national oil giant Shell) is one of the country's largest employers, employing a sizable number of expats.
