Iran expelled from UN Women’s Commission in a vote of 29 to 8; India abstains

UN Women’s Commission: Following the Mahsa Amini protest, Iran was expelled from the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women on Wednesday night.
A total of 16 nations abstained from voting including India, in a vote that was 29 to 8. Nicaragua, Nigeria, Oman, Bolivia, China, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Zimbabwe were the eight countries that voted against.
The Islamic Republic of Iran was expelled from the Commission on the Status of Women with immediate effect for the duration of its 2022–2026 term, according to a decision passed by the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
The decision was made as Iranians continued their nationwide protests for a 12th week, according to The Jerusalem Post. After Mahsa Amini passed away in September, demonstrations started.

UK Ambassador Barbara Woodward in Mahsa Amini’s death

Mahsa Amini’s passing, according to UK Ambassador Barbara Woodward, is a tragic reminder of the oppression of women and girls in Iran.

In her address to the 54 members of ECOSOC, Woodward said, “Since her death, the Iranian people’s message has been clear: they will no longer tolerate violence and oppression at the hands of their own government,”. The Iranian people and we both urge that the rights of women and girls be upheld, she continued.

The decision today, according to US National Security Advisor (NSA) Jake Sullivan, is another another indication of the growing international agreement on Iran and the need for accountability.

He further added, “The United States is working with our allies and partners around the world to hold Iran accountable for the abuses it is committing against its own people, notably peaceful protesters, women and girls, and the violence it is enabling against the Ukrainian people, as well as its destabilizing actions throughout the Middle East region.”

Permanent representative of the Czech Republic to the UN requests Iran

Jakub Kulhanek, the permanent representative of the Czech Republic to the UN, urges the Iranian government to stop silencing dissenting voices by arbitrarily detaining people and to free all those who have been wrongfully jailed.

In a statement on behalf of the EU, ambassador Kulhanek said, “The unusual decision today is justified by the seriousness of the human rights situation and does not modify our attitude on multilateralism.”

The primary intergovernmental organisation in the world devoted solely to advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment is the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW).
